My New Year Rituals for a Grounded and Intentional Year

January always feels like a breath of fresh air—a beautiful reminder that we can begin again. While we have the power to start fresh at any point in the year, there’s something special about the energy of a new year. It feels like a symbolic clean slate, inviting us to reflect, recalibrate, and set intentions for what we want to build in the months ahead.

Whether it’s focusing on health, cultivating abundance, nurturing relationships, or starting new habits, this is the perfect time to lay the foundation for a fulfilling year. For me, I like to keep my New Year rituals simple and grounding. I’ve been doing these New Year rituals for over a decade now, and I can’t imagine starting a new year without them. They not only help me focus on what I want to cultivate within myself but also serve as the blueprint for what I aim to create in the world that year. In December, I spend time reflecting on where my heart is calling me to go next, leaning into the process of listening, allowing, and surrendering.

Choosing My Word for the Year

Each year, I choose a word or phrase to anchor me—something to guide my decisions and keep me aligned. This year, my word is Artisan. To me, it represents artistry, intentionality, and creating something meaningful. It’s a reminder to approach everything I do with care and creativity, whether in my work, relationships, or personal growth.

On a deeper level, Artisan reflects my yearning to create with my hands and reconnect with the way my ancestors made things. I come from a family deeply rooted in the art of cooking and crafting food from scratch. The aromas of my childhood kitchen—filled with spices and herbs—have awakened a desire in me to learn this craft. My mother, grandmothers, grandfathers, and even my great-grandparents were natural healers in the kitchen.

Practicing herbalism over the past few years has opened the door to this connection. Now, I see those kitchen aromas through a new lens, recognizing the incredible healing power of those spices and herbs. For me, Artisan serves as a guide to rediscover my roots and honor the legacy of my family’s hands-on wisdom.

Setting Intentions and Dreams

I like to make a list of things I want to learn, places I want to visit, and books I want to read. This practice helps me dream big while keeping my goals tangible and exciting. Last year, I challenged myself to give up sugar. It wasn’t easy—wow, was it tough!—but in the end, it was so worth it.

Some years, I jot down my list and keep it tucked in my journal, while other years, I take the time to create a vision board. The images keep me inspired and connected to what I’m working toward.

This year, one of my goals is to revisit my yoga books from when I completed teacher training. When I first read them, I was a different person—what I absorbed then was shaped by who I was and what I could process at the time. Now, more than a decade later, I’m curious to see what new insights and awakenings they might bring as I read them again with fresh eyes and a more expansive perspective.

Daily Movement and Connection

Staying grounded and connected to my body is essential. I make sure to move every day, whether it’s a yoga session or a simple walk around the neighborhood. Movement helps me clear my mind and stay present.

I also prioritize the things that fill me up: spending quality time with loved ones, enjoying moments of quiet reflection, and literally stopping to smell the flowers in my garden. These small acts of mindfulness help me stay balanced and joyful.

Recreating Ourselves

January is such a potent month for inner creativity—a time to set the stage for the year ahead. It’s not about doing everything perfectly but about starting with intention, honoring where we are, and taking small, meaningful steps forward.

As I embrace the year ahead, I’m excited to lean into my word, Artisan, and bring more care and creativity into everything I do.

How are you starting your year? What rituals help you feel grounded and inspired for the months ahead? If you’re looking for a fresh way to reset, I invite you to explore the healing power of Reiki, Thai massage, or meditation—tools that have been transformative in my own journey.
