When I first embarked on my reiki journey, I was unaware of how profoundly the Five Principles of Reiki would impact my life. Mikao Usui, the founder of reiki, discovered profound happiness, peace, and both physical and emotional healing through reiki and these principles. He shared this transformative practice with others, and it is a legacy that today’s reiki teachers continue to uphold.

The Five Principles of Reiki: Spiritual Guidelines for a Balanced Life

The Five Principles of Reiki are spiritual guidelines followed by reiki practitioners. These principles embody the core ideals of reiki and offer a framework for living a life aligned with spiritual and personal growth. Although the principles were originally translated from Japanese and some translations may vary slightly, their essence remains consistent.

Here is the contemporary translation of the Five Principles of Reiki:

Just for today, I will not worry.
Just for today, I will not be angry.
Just for today, I will do my work honestly.
Just for today, I will give thanks for my many blessings.
Just for today, I will be kind to my neighbor and all living things.

Each principle begins with “Just for today” to remind us that, when life becomes overwhelming, we can focus on managing our responses one day at a time. These principles are not meant to be used as tools for self-judgment but as aspirational guidelines. It is perfectly okay if you cannot adhere to them every day; you can always start again tomorrow.

Exploring the Five Principles of Reiki

  1. Just for Today, I Will Not Worry
Worry is a low-vibrating emotion rooted in fear and “what if” scenarios. It keeps us preoccupied with negative outcomes and causes unnecessary anxiety. By affirming “Just for today, I will not worry,” you allow yourself to release the stress and preoccupation of future uncertainties. This practice brings you back to the present moment and fosters trust that whatever happens is for your highest good. Though letting go of worry can be challenging, with continued practice, you will find that your life and health benefit greatly.
  2. Just for Today, I Will Not Be Angry
Anger is a deep-seated emotion that can be disruptive and harmful. It often arises from fear or limiting beliefs and can lead to unnecessary conflict and hurt. Rather than trying to suppress anger, the aim is to recognize it when it appears, understand its triggers, and choose not to react impulsively. By practicing “Just for today, I will not be angry,” you consciously decide not to let anger dominate your day. Allowing anger to pass without attachment diminishes its power over you.
  3. Just for Today, I Will Do My Work Honestly
This principle emphasizes the importance of intention in our work, whether it relates to our job or our spiritual growth. If you are engaged in work that does not resonate with you, you are not being true to yourself. This principle encourages you to view your work in a new light, recognizing its value and contribution to your spiritual path. To work honestly means dedicating yourself to purposeful living and spiritual development, both professionally and personally.
  4. Just for Today, I Will Be Grateful for My Many Blessings
Cultivating gratitude enhances our overall well-being, fosters happiness, and helps us manage our emotions more effectively. By focusing on the positive aspects of our lives, we can see that we have more to be thankful for than we might realize. Practicing “Just for today, I will be grateful for my many blessings” teaches us to appreciate what we have, leading to a healthier, happier, and more fulfilling life.
  5. Just for Today, I Will Be Kind to My Neighbor and All Living Things
This principle teaches us to honor and respect all forms of life, including people, animals, plants, and the Earth. By practicing kindness and compassion toward others, regardless of differences in viewpoint or status, we contribute to our collective well-being and evolution. Additionally, kindness towards ourselves is crucial, as many of us are our harshest critics. By extending kindness, we invite more kindness into our own lives.

These principles form the foundation of a reiki lifestyle, supporting practitioners in living more consciously and harmoniously. Consider printing out the Five Principles of Reiki and placing them in a visible location, such as your bathroom door or mirror, to serve as a daily reminder.

In a world filled with complexity and chaos, the wisdom of Lao Tzu’s timeless quote resonates deeply, offering a profound guide to navigating life’s journey with grace and wisdom. “Simplicity, patience, compassion. These three are your greatest treasures.”

This quote inspired me as I have worked on developing these qualities in myself and I understand that the ways of our culture pull us in the opposite direction. These simple treasures are not valued as I believe they should be, and because of it, we must work hard on creating inner peace from within. Despite this feeling like a struggle, it actually strengthens us in our hearts and minds as we work on shifting our perspectives toward compassion and peace with every opportunity. We are creating a space among friends, among family, and our community to see what is possible. So let’s embrace simplicity, patience, and compassion together, and let our actions and thoughts radiate light and love into the world.

The Three Greatest Treasures

Embracing Simplicity: In a world that often glorifies busyness and material wealth, simplicity becomes a radical act of rebellion. By simplifying our actions and thoughts, we shed the unnecessary layers of complexity that weigh us down. Embracing simplicity allows us to return to the essence of our being, where true contentment and fulfillment reside. It invites us to prioritize what truly matters and find joy in the beauty of life’s simple pleasures.

Cultivating Patience: Patience is not merely the ability to wait but the capacity to maintain a sense of inner peace and tranquility amidst life’s inevitable challenges and uncertainties. By cultivating patience, we learn to flow with the rhythm of life, accepting things as they are without resistance or struggle. Patience allows us to trust in the unfolding of the universe’s divine timing, knowing that everything happens in its own perfect time and place.

Practicing Compassion: Compassion is the ultimate expression of love and kindness, both towards others and ourselves. It is the act of extending a hand of understanding and empathy to all beings, regardless of their background or circumstances. When we approach ourselves and others with compassion, we dissolve the barriers that separate us and recognize the interconnectedness of all life. Compassion is the key that unlocks the door to unity and harmony, fostering healing and reconciliation in a world desperately in need of love.

Breathing Them Into Our Being

To meditate on these three treasures—simplicity, patience, and compassion—using breath and visualization, find a quiet and comfortable space to sit. Close your eyes and take a few deep breaths to center yourself. As you inhale, imagine breathing in simplicity, allowing your thoughts to become clear and unattached. With each exhale, release any tension or clutter from your mind. Imagine it flowing out of your body with your exhale.

Next, focus on patience. With each breath, visualize yourself accepting the present moment. Let go of any urgency or need for immediate results, allowing yourself to surrender to the flow of time.

Finally, turn your attention to compassion. As you continue to breathe deeply, imagine filling your heart with compassion and kindness. Visualize waves of love and empathy flowing into you with every breath in and flowing out of you with every breath out. Embrace all beings with warmth and understanding, including the people closest to you.

Continue this practice for as long as you like, allowing the qualities of simplicity, patience, and compassion to permeate your being with each breath.

Final Thoughts

As we integrate the principles of simplicity, patience, and compassion into our daily lives, we realize that true wealth lies not in material possessions but in the richness of our inner world. We discover the power of presence and mindfulness in each moment, and take it in with gratitude and awe. We become beacons of light, illuminating the path for others to follow.

I chose the image of a mountain landscape to represent the three treasures because I can find these aspects of myself when I think about the mountains or are near them. There’s something powerful about them that draws these qualities out of me.

In the words of Lao Tzu, “Simple in actions and thoughts, you return to the source of being. Patient with both friends and enemies, you accord with the way things are. Compassionate toward yourself, you reconcile all beings in the world.” May we heed these words and embody the essence of simplicity, patience, and compassion in all that we do.” For in doing so, we not only transform our own lives but also contribute to the creation of a more peaceful and loving world for all.

As the world awakens from its winter dormancy, the Spring Equinox marks a shift into the cycle of rebirth, renewal, and rejuvenation. Across cultures and traditions, this celestial event holds profound significance, symbolizing the balance between light and dark, yin and yang. In Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, the arrival of spring represents a shift in energy and offers valuable insights into how we can optimize our well-being during this season of growth and transformation.

The Wisdom of Chinese Medicine

According to Chinese Medicine, spring is associated with the Wood element and the energy of the Liver and Gallbladder meridians. As nature bursts forth in vibrant hues of color and vitality, so too does the energy within us. The Liver is responsible for the smooth flow of Qi (vital energy) throughout the body, while the Gallbladder governs decision-making and the ability to take action.

In Chinese Medicine, the Liver and Gallbladder are not merely seen as physical organs, but as energetic centers that play a vital role in our holistic well-being. These meridians govern not only the physiological functions of the liver and gallbladder but also influence our emotional state, decision-making abilities, and overall vitality. It’s essential to nourish and support these energy centers to maintain balance and harmony within the body.

During spring, the energy of the Liver is at its peak, making it an optimal time for cleansing and detoxification. Just as trees blossom and plants emerge from the earth, our bodies respond to the seasonal shift by seeking renewal and growth. To optimize our health during this time, it’s essential to support the Liver’s function and ensure the smooth flow of Qi. Incorporating cleansing foods, such as leafy greens, sprouts, and citrus fruits, can help to nourish the Liver and promote vitality.

Ayurvedic Insights

In Ayurveda, doshas are the three fundamental energies or principles that govern physiological and psychological functions within the body: Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Each dosha represents a unique combination of elements (ether, air, fire, water, and earth) and manifests in specific qualities and characteristics. In Ayurvedic medicine, there are three seasons, each corresponding to a dosha: Vata season (fall and early winter), Pitta season (late spring and summer), and Kapha season (late winter and spring).

Spring corresponds to the Kapha dosha, which governs stability, structure, and lubrication in the body. As the earth thaws and new life begins to emerge, Kapha’s heavy and sluggish qualities can manifest as congestion, lethargy, and seasonal allergies. However, by embracing Ayurvedic practices, we can harness the energy of spring to cleanse and rejuvenate our bodies and minds.

During the spring season, Ayurveda emphasizes the importance of balancing Kapha to prevent stagnation and promote vitality. Incorporating warming spices, such as ginger, cinnamon, and turmeric, can help to stimulate digestion and metabolism, while also supporting the body’s natural detoxification processes. Additionally, practices such as dry brushing, yoga, and meditation can help to invigorate the body and uplift the spirit, promoting a sense of lightness and well-being.

Nurturing Vitality in Spring

As we welcome spring, it’s essential to align our lifestyle with the energy of the season and support our bodies’ natural rhythms. Here are some ways to optimize your wellness during this season:

1. Cleanse and Detoxify: Incorporate cleansing foods and herbs into your diet to support your body’s natural detoxification processes and promote vitality.

2. Get Moving: Take advantage of the longer days and warmer weather by getting outside and moving your body. Practice gentle yoga, go for a nature walk, or engage in outdoor activities that uplift your spirit and invigorate your senses.

3. Embrace Lightness: Let go of heavy, stagnant energy by decluttering your living space, releasing emotional baggage, and embracing a mindset of growth and possibility.

4. Nourish with Seasonal Foods: Fill your plate with seasonal fruits and vegetables that support cleansing and renewal, such as leafy greens, asparagus, berries, and sprouts. Experiment with fresh herbs and spices to add flavor and vibrancy to your meals.

5. Practice Mindfulness: Take time each day to cultivate mindfulness and presence through meditation, deep breathing, or journaling. Connect with the rhythm of your breath and the beauty of nature, allowing yourself to be fully present in the moment.

By incorporating these practices into your daily routine, you can harness the energy of spring to nourish your body, uplift your spirit, and embrace the abundance of new beginnings. As you align with the rhythms of nature and honor the wisdom of traditional medicine, may you find balance, bliss, and radiant vitality in the season ahead.

As I write this post, I am obsessively smelling the top of my hand where I dabbed a few different oils and they have created their own synergy. I love it when unintentional blending leads to something magical. I wish you could smell this! So I started blending these oils as inspiration for this post on two of my favorite things – reiki and aromatherapy. As someone who’s deeply passionate about holistic healing, these two modalities have become like old friends to me, at different points in my life they have actively participated in my healing, self-love and somatic awareness.

Reiki has this incredible way of helping me tap into a reservoir of inner peace and reconnect with the rhythm of life. We all have off days and we all have days where our soul needs a hug. Reiki is that hug for me. The love I feel flowing through my body reminds me to let go of that emotion – lately it’s been frustration – that is keeping me stressed. And when I do I instantly feel like I am sinking into myself again. The way I am without all the crud from the outside world, and finding my peaceful Self again.

And when I pair this experience with aromatherapy? Well, magic happens. Essential oils have a direct pathway to the brain where they can evoke memories, soothe emotions, and promote a sense of peace and balance. I’m going to nerd out for a moment because this is super interesting and blows my mind. Aromatherapy has this effect on us because of the olfactory system, which is the sensory system responsible for our sense of smell. It involves the detection and processing of odor molecules by specialized sensory cells in the nasal cavity called olfactory receptors. These receptors transmit signals to the brain, specifically to the olfactory bulb, where the brain interprets the information and identifies different scents. As a child, I remember waking up to the smell of toast and fresh brewed Cuban coffee, reminding me of my mom and grandma and our family traditions. To this day, the smell of toast makes me think of them. This is how the olfactory system works. A scent triggers an emotional response that influences our behavior and memory. This symbiotic relationship supports emotional awareness and healing.

Essential oils have this amazing ability to speak to our senses in a way that words can’t quite capture. Whether it’s the calming aroma of lavender or the invigorating scent of peppermint, each oil carries its own unique energy that can help us shift our mood and mindset in an instant. I’ve found that blending these oils with my reiki practice amplifies the balancing effects, creating an opportunity for transformation and growth.

One of my favorite moments was when I first experimented with combining essential oils and reiki during a self-care session. I remember feeling the weight of the world melt away as I applied a calming blend to my wrists and settled into a reiki meditation. It was like all the stress and worries of the day just evaporated, leaving behind a sense of peace and clarity that I hadn’t felt in a while.

Since then, I’ve been on a mission to share reiki and aromatherapy with others. In my practice, I’ve seen firsthand how this synergistic combination can help people find balance, release tension, and reconnect with their inner wisdom. If you’re struggling with stress, anxiety, or just feeling a bit out of sorts, give it a try. You don’t need to follow any formula. Just smell some essential oils and take a drop or two of the ones you like into a tablespoon of carrier oil. Apply on your wrist, inner elbow and back of the neck. There’s something truly transformative about experiencing these modalities together.

As the days grow longer and nature comes alive with vibrant colors, there’s a palpable sense of renewal in the air. Spring is a time of fresh beginnings, making it the perfect opportunity to incorporate self-care practices that nourish our body, mind, and spirit. Here are five simple ways you can make the most of the spring season and cultivate a sense of renewal in your life.

1. Celebrate the Spring Equinox: On March 21st, the spring equinox marks the official start of the season. Take this opportunity to honor the balance of light and dark and set an intention for your personal growth. I have a Spring Equinox Women’s Circle coming up where we will honor this cycle of renewal together in a sacredness. You can also create your own ritual to welcome the changing season. Whether it’s lighting candles, setting intentions, or simply spending time in nature, find a way to connect with the energy of spring and embrace its revitalizing power in your life.

2. Get Outdoors and Move: Spring is the perfect time to break out of our winter cocoon and get moving. Take advantage of the warmer weather by spending time outdoors and engaging in activities like walking, yoga, or qi gong. Not only will you benefit from the physical exercise, but being in nature can also help reduce stress, boost your mood, and increase your sense of well-being. So put your sneakers on, roll out your yoga mat, and let this rising energy of spring inspire you to invigorate your body.

3. Declutter and Organize Your Home: Just as nature sheds its winter coat and prepares for new growth, spring is an ideal time to declutter and organize your living space. Clearing out clutter not only creates a sense of physical order but can also help clear your mind and reduce stress. Start small by tackling one area at a time, whether it’s a junk drawer, closet, or kitchen pantry. As you create space in your home, you’ll find that your mind feels lighter and more focused, allowing you to fully welcome the opportunities that spring has to offer. I start with my closet, then tackle my bookshelves and finally gather miscellaneous items around the house. By the end of it, I have several boxes that I donate to local charities.

4. Create a Vision Board or Journal Your Goals: Spring is a season of possibilities, making it the perfect time to set intentions and visualize your dreams for the year ahead. Consider creating a vision board filled with images and words that represent your goals and aspirations. If this sounds like too much of a task, grab your journal and spend some time writing about your hopes, dreams, and intentions for the coming months. By putting your intentions down on paper, you’ll not only clarify your desires but also begin to manifest them into reality.

5. Establish a Morning Routine: A morning routine sets the tone for the rest of your day and can have a profound impact on your overall well-being. Use the energy of spring to establish a morning routine that nourishes your body, mind, and soul. Whether it’s starting your day with meditation, yoga, or a nutritious breakfast, find activities that help you feel grounded and centered. By prioritizing self-care in the morning, you’ll set yourself up for success and approach each day with a sense of purpose and vitality. I love the book ‘Miracle Morning’ by Hal Elrod. It  talks about how important our morning routines are in being successful in achieving our goals.

I am one of those people who loves the changing seasons. Coming from Florida, it’s challenging because summers often feel endless. So when spring and fall roll around, I am over the moon. I fell in love with the seasons – yes, even summer – through Ayurveda and Chinese Medicine. These ancient practices remind us to tune into nature’s cycles. Spring brings a vibrant energy, offering us the chance to blossom alongside nature. Incorporating seasonal self-care practices into our routine promotes balance, vitality, and well-being. I encourage you to cultivate a sense of renewal within yourself, allowing the energy of spring to inspire you to thrive. Hope you make the most of this season of renewal!

The day flies by in a blur, doesn’t it? With all the demands pulling us in different directions, it’s easy to feel like we’re constantly playing catch-up. That’s why I carved out a little slice of time long ago for a self-care ritual that feels like a precious gift to myself.

This ritual revolves around a simple yet deeply nourishing self-care salt bath. It’s my sanctuary in the chaos—a moment of pause from the relentless busyness of everyday life. When I step into a warm bath prepared with love, I feel like I am reclaiming a piece of myself that often gets lost by the demands of being productive.

Taking this salt bath, sometimes once a week, is an act of self love. Not only does it work wonders for soothing tired muscles and melting stress away, but it also has an ability to move my mind to a place of tranquility. I first stumbled upon the idea of self-care baths back in college, when I needed a lifeline to help me navigate the pressures of academia. Since then, they’ve been my default companion through moments of anxiety and stress, always guiding me back to center.

My go-to recipe for this soul-soothing salt bath includes simple, natural ingredients like salt, baking soda, and a blend of eucalyptus and lavender essential oils. But the beauty of this ritual lies in its flexibility—you can make it to suit your own preferences and needs.

Maybe today is the day you carve out a little time for yourself and try it out. We could all benefit from slowing down and nurturing our body, mind, and spirit. And you know you deserve this!

Benefits of Salt Baths

Before we dive into the recipe, let’s take a moment to appreciate the numerous benefits of salt baths.

1. Muscle Relaxation: The minerals found in salt help to relax muscles and alleviate tension, making it an excellent remedy for soreness and fatigue.

2. Stress Relief: Immersing yourself in a warm salt bath can promote relaxation and reduce stress levels, allowing you to unwind after a long day.

3. Skin Nourishment: Salt baths can help cleanse and detoxify the skin, leaving it feeling soft, smooth, and rejuvenated.

4. Respiratory Support: The aromatic steam from a salt bath infused with essential oils like eucalyptus can help clear congestion and support respiratory health.

5. Mood Enhancement: The calming aroma of essential oils like lavender can promote relaxation and well-being, enhancing your overall mood and outlook.

DIY Self-Care Salt Bath Recipe:

Here is the fun part – creating your own salt bath blend. Here’s what you’ll need:

Ingredients

  • 1 cup Epsom salt
  • 1/2 cup sea salt or Himalayan pink salt
  • 1/4 cup baking soda
  • 10 drops eucalyptus essential oil or essential oil of your choice
  • 10 drops lavender essential oil or essential oil of your choice
  • 2 tablespoons almond oil
  • Optional: add 1 tbsp of dried rose petals
  • Instructions

1. Start by mixing the Epsom salt, sea salt (or Himalayan pink salt), and baking soda in a large bowl. Stir well to ensure that the ingredients are thoroughly combined.

2. Once the dry ingredients are mixed, add the eucalyptus and lavender essential oils to the mixture. These aromatic oils will infuse your bath with a soothing and invigorating aroma.

3. Finally, drizzle the almond oil over the salt blend and stir gently to distribute it evenly. Almond oil is rich in vitamins and antioxidants, making it an excellent choice for nourishing and moisturizing the skin during your bath.

4. Store your DIY salt bath blend in an airtight container or jar until you’re ready to use it.

How to Use

To enjoy a blissful salt bath experience, simply add 1/2 to 1 cup of your homemade salt blend to a warm bath and allow it to dissolve completely. Then, sink into the bath and relax for at least 20 minutes, allowing the therapeutic properties of the salts and essential oils to work their magic.

Close your eyes, take deep breaths, and let go of any tension or stress you may be holding onto. I like to play relaxing music and light candles in my bath. This is your time to create the ambiance that will help you relax. After your bath, gently pat your skin dry and moisturize with your favorite body lotion or oil for an added layer of hydration.

Taking the time to soak in a self-care salt bath is a wonderful way to nurture your body, mind, and spirit. With this simple DIY recipe, you can create your own luxurious bath blend using essential oils that promote relaxation, stress relief, and overall well-being.

If you’re a massage therapist on the verge of burnout or are curiously looking for a modality that can complement your services, this article is for you. Reiki is a modality that is light on your body and has profound stress and tension relieving effects for your clients. You may have heard of it in passing at your massage school or at places you’ve worked. I came across it about 25 years ago and I didn’t get it at first. I was in massage school and spent the better part of six months developing myself as a skilled therapeutic massage therapist when a guest teacher visited and shared reiki with us. Although I didn’t understand the language of energy healing, I felt something deep shift inside me. That class changed the way I gave massage and without even trying when I massaged clients I could get back to that place of peace and connection to that greater source of love. My clients could feel it too.

What is Reiki

Reiki is a Japanese modality in which the practitioner harnesses Life Force Energy into their hands and transfers it to their clients. Giving it is much like being in meditation. It is both beneficial for the practitioner and the client because as the practitioner harnesses the energy it flows through them too. It heals them, it releases blocks and moves stagnant ki (energy) from tissues, and then it does the same for clients. It is a blissful place to be in a treatment.

As massage therapists, we are dedicated to the art of touch, we want our clients to experience relaxation, and we want to instill positive wellness habits in our clients’ lives. Whether you are working for yourself or at a wellness center or spa, we are in the world of healing and every session offers an opportunity for us to explore different ways of enhancing our care to our clients.

Let me explain further what reiki is. I know I said it is a modality and technically speaking it is, but that is too limiting to what is truly is and does. It’s not just another modality; it’s an energy-based healing practice that taps into the natural life force present in all of us. The word itself says it all. Rei means Universal or coming from the omnipotent source and Ki means energy. Reiki has been defined as Universal Life Force Energy, but the more accurate definition is Spirit Empowered Energy. Reiki connects us to the source that created the energy and directs the energy. As pieces of creation, we are already tapped into it as part of our very nature. Practicing reiki helps us to deepen that connection for our own self growth and also share that connection with our clients. Reiki offers an opportunity to expand our healing toolkit, complementing our hands-on techniques with the power of energy and intention.

The Benefits of Reiki For Your Massage Practice

One of the remarkable aspects of reiki is its ability to deepen our connection to healing. As massage therapists, we understand the importance of touch, but reiki takes us beyond touch—into the world of energy. Through reiki training, we learn to sense and channel this energy, amplifying our innate healing abilities.

Reiki doesn’t replace our massage techniques or services but enhances them. When I first started practicing massage, it was my clients who told me that they could sense something energetically deeper in the massage that alleviated their pain. Reiki was moving through me without any effort and that is one of the beauties of this practice. We simply step out of the our own way and show up with our best intentions for our clients and connect to this source and it does the rest. It naturally improves our massage and is the perfect complement to our practice. Clients experience a sense of relaxation and balance that can be lost in trying to do too much in a 50 or 80 minute appointment on a busy day.

One of the most significant advantages of incorporating reiki into my practice is it prevents burnout. We give so much of ourselves during sessions, and sometimes our energy can become depleted. Reiki is a powerful self-care tool that replenishes our energy reserves, restoring balance within us, and helping us avoid therapist burnout.

Reiki also enhances our intuitive touch. It fine-tunes our sensitivity to the flow of energy, allowing us to better perceive our clients’ needs and respond intuitively during sessions. This heightened intuition becomes a valuable tool in customizing treatments to address each client’s unique concerns.

Another important aspect is the holistic approach reiki brings. A massage session is not only physical; it touches the emotional, mental, and spiritual aspects of clients, whether we are aware of it or not. Reiki helps us piece together these aspects of our clients well-being and gives us a holistic perspective that allows us to address not just the physical symptoms but reach the intangible layers of our clients’ discomfort.

Imagine adding a layer of tranquility to your massage sessions—the kind that lingers long after your client leaves the table. That’s the gift of Reiki—a lasting sense of peace that resonates within your clients.

Reiki Improves Your Therapeutic Touch

Reiki training also cultivates personal and spiritual growth. It’s an inward journey, encouraging self-reflection and mindfulness. As we explore reiki, we deepen our understanding of ourselves, nurturing a more profound sense of balance and well-being.

Incorporating reiki into our practice is not about changing our techniques but rather expanding our horizons and offering an enriched experience for our clients. It’s about aligning our passion for healing with a broader spectrum of therapeutic possibilities.

Reiki is an invitation to deepen our connection to healing, nurture our own well-being, and offer our clients an even more profound experience of relaxation and healing. It’s not just another skill; it’s a transformative journey toward unlocking our full healing potential—one that both we and our clients benefit from.

Choosing a Reiki Training and Teacher

In order to offer reiki services to clients, we must learn the fundamental principles of energy healing and how it works. This is done through reiki training courses with an experienced reiki master that can properly guide you. Reiki involves a gentle laying on of hands, it works within the body’s energy field to promote relaxation and balance on a holistic level. Courses are typically given in three levels. Level 1 training covers the fundamentals of energy healing and is focused on self healing. Level 2 progresses into advanced energy healing techniques and developing an intuitive touch, listening with your hands and learning distant healing. Level 3 focuses on developing a deeper connection with the source of reiki and attuning others. There is no one organization that certifies reiki practitioners. Certification is done through the reiki teacher and that is why reiki trainings vary greatly. Some trainings are a few hours covering the basics but lack hands-on practice, while others may be longer. The content of trainings may also be different as some teachers include their experiences into a class. It is important to choose a reiki training based on the teacher and whether their style of teaching aligns with you and what you want to learn. I offer my reiki training, Hand to Soul School of Reiki & Healing Arts, as two-day weekend courses and my style is based on the Usui Reiki Ryoho lineage. Get to know your reiki teacher, ask them questions and if possible receive a reiki treatment from them. Although that is not necessary, it can help you discern whether you’re a good fit. Once you have found a teacher, mind set it everything. Go into your reiki training with an open mind and heart, and have a clear intention for yourself.

Creating a body spray using essential oils is a wonderful way to make a personalized, natural scent while also benefiting from the therapeutic properties of essential oils. Here’s a simple recipe for a DIY Essential Oil Body Spray:

Ingredients:

  • 2 ounces (60 ml) distilled water
  • 1 tablespoon witch hazel or vodka (acts as a preservative and helps the oils mix with water)
  • 15-20 drops of your preferred essential oils (e.g., lavender, citrus, peppermint, etc.)
  • A small funnel
  • A clean 2-ounce spray bottle

Instructions:

  1. Using the funnel, pour the witch hazel or vodka into the spray bottle.
  2. Add 15-20 drops of your chosen essential oils to the bottle. You can use a single essential oil or create a blend by combining a few oils that complement each other. For example, a relaxing blend might include lavender and chamomile, while an energizing blend could feature citrus oils like lemon and orange.
  3. Slowly fill the rest of the bottle with distilled water, leaving a little space at the top to avoid overflow when you put the sprayer top on.
  4. Tightly seal the bottle with the sprayer top and shake the bottle gently to mix the ingredients.

These tips will help keep your DIY Body Spray fresh.

First, shake the body spray well before each use to ensure the essential oils are evenly distributed in the mixture.

If you are new to using essential oil, you may also want to perform a patch test on a small area of your skin before using the body spray more widely. This will ensure you don’t have any sensitivities or allergies to the oils.

Choose essential oils that are pure essential oils and not fragrance oils. Fragrance oils may cause allergies and skin sensitivities, not to mention they may have harmful chemicals in them. You don’t want that on your skin.

It’s best to store the body spray in a cool, dark place to help preserve the potency of the essential oils. The sun will degrade your oils.

This DIY essential oil body spray is customizable, use this as a starting point to create your own blends.  Experiment with different essential oil combinations to create scents that you love or that offer you the therapeutic benefits you need.

This is my fail proof hot cocoa recipe that I change up with the seasons. Since we are in winter, I like to use peppermint. It’s a nice balance between the grounding hot chocolate and the coolness from the mint. This time of year welcomes rest, comfort and warmth. Warming drinks and foods help balance the body and the mind during this season. Making a steaming mug of peppermint hot cocoa is a seasonal favorite of mine. Here’s the recipe and I hope you enjoy it.

Ingredients:

  • 2 cups unsweetened almond milk or any milk of your choice
  • 2 tablespoons unsweetened cocoa powder (I love this organic cocoa powder!)
  • 2-3 tablespoons maple syrup (adjust to your desired sweetness)
  • 1/2 teaspoon pure vanilla extract (This Madagascar vanilla is the best)
  • 1/4 teaspoon peppermint extract (adjust to taste; I use this peppermint extract)
  • Whipped cream (dairy free or milk based; this is optional, for garnish)
  • Peppermint candy cane (optional, for garnish)

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Cocoa Base: In a saucepan over medium heat, pour the unsweetened almond milk. Whisk in the cocoa powder until it’s completely dissolved and the mixture is smooth.
  2. Sweeten it Up: Stir in the maple syrup, adjusting the amount according to your preferred level of sweetness. Add the vanilla extract and let the mixture gently simmer for about 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.
  3. Add the Peppermint Twist: Carefully add the peppermint extract to the hot cocoa, a few drops at a time, tasting as you go until you achieve your desired level of mintiness. Remember, a little goes a long way!
  4. Serve and Garnish: Pour the creamy and aromatic hot cocoa into your favorite mug. For an extra touch of festivity, top it off with a scoop of vegan whipped cream and a peppermint candy cane.
  5. Sip & Savor: Find a comfy place to sit and enjoy the minty aroma and the velvety smoothness of this delicious peppermint hot cocoa.

Don’t hesitate to customize it to your taste preferences by adjusting the sweetness or adding extra peppermint. Cheers to joyful moments and delicious sips!

Baked Apples with Spices Recipe

Ingredients:

  • 4 large apples (such as Honeycrisp, Gala, or Fuji)
  • 1/4 cup brown sugar (or substitute for 4 tablespoons of maple syrup for a healthier option)
  • 1/4 cup chopped nuts (walnuts, pecans, or almonds work well)
  • 2 tablespoons coconut oil or unsalted butter
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 cup raisins or dried cranberries (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the Oven: Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Prepare the Apples: Wash the apples thoroughly and dry them. Using an apple corer or a small knife, carefully remove the cores, leaving the bottom intact to create a cavity for the filling. Alternatively, you can cut the apples in half and place the filling into the carved core pocket. Place the apples in a baking dish.
  3. Prepare the Filling: In a bowl, mix together the brown sugar (or alternative sweetener), chopped nuts, butter (or oil), cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, ginger, and the raisins or dried cranberries if using. Combine everything until it forms a crumbly mixture.
  4. Fill the Apples: Stuff each apple with the prepared filling, dividing it equally among them. Press the filling gently into the cavities.
  5. Bake the Apples: Cover the baking dish with foil and bake the apples in the preheated oven for about 25-30 minutes, or until they are tender but not mushy.
  6. Serve: Once baked, remove the apples from the oven. Let them cool for a few minutes before serving. Optionally, serve with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or a scoop of whipped cream for an extra treat.
  7. Enjoy! Dig into these delightful baked apples with spices, savoring the warm, fragrant flavors and the tender sweetness of the apples.

This dessert is a delicious treat during the colder months but can be made year round as apples are readily available. Adjust the sweetness and spices according to your taste preferences, and feel free to experiment with different nuts or dried fruits for variations on this classic baked apple recipe.
